A storybook little town, 690m up in the Southern Highlands and about an hour and a half from Sydney. Tree-lined streets, boutique shops spilling onto the footpath, cosy cafes tucked into old cottages, and a main strip with a whole different, slower kind of magic to it.

My experience & recommendations

  • Feels like a different world only ~1.5 hours from Sydney. Big Gilmore Girls energy: cosy cafes, little art galleries, vintage boutiques and a slower pace of life.
  • Grab a pastry at The Gumnut Patisserie, famous for a reason, genuinely insane.
  • Spend a chunk of your day at Dirty Janes, an antique store that just keeps going, easy to get a little lost in. The potting shed section is the standout.
  • There are a few lookouts around town worth a short stroll for, an easy way to break up all the shopping with a view.

Refuel stop

Finish the day at Harry's on Green Lane, solid comfort food, exactly what you want after a day of wandering.

  • The customer service here was incredible, honestly what made the whole experience. Our host was lovely, so funny, and never once pushy, just really good vibes.
  • Loved the indoor/outdoor feel of the place, we sat inside with it fully open, looking straight out at the vineyard.
  • The wine itself was delicious, we each picked a different one to taste each round, worked really well for comparing notes.

  • This was my favourite of the three wineries. The location is stunning, situated on 100 acres of pure serenity in the Southern Highlands with highland cows, sheep and even baby goats on the land, which we were allowed to go and feed.
  • It's set in a big open barn with eating outside too, by firepits. The goats were roaming around inside during the tasting, which was adorable, and getting to feed them is honestly what made it so good.
  • The customer service was phenomenal, everyone was really chatty and interested, and the wine tasting itself was really impressive, they even added a small charcuterie pairing which was a lovely touch.

  • I loved the wine here so much, they had some lovely choices and we got to try six.
  • The vibe was relaxed, outside with loads of space, I'd recommend this one for families as it's a bit bigger and less intimate.
  • Apparently they're famous for their pizza too, but we didn't get to try it!
  • The cellar door itself is built from recycled river redgum, giving it a lovely rustic feel.

Just over an hour from the city, this little seaside town feels a world away from Sydney.

My experience & recommendations

  • Skip the main beach, go to North Avoca instead. Way quieter!
  • There's a little boardwalk along the beach, the Terrigal Boardwalk, worth the walk if you've got time.
  • Good spot for whale watching if you're there in season.
  • Walk up The Skillion, the grassy headland above the Haven, for views both ways along the coast, Terrigal Beach one side, Avoca the other, and one of the best sunset spots in town.
  • Honestly just go for the day and chill at the beach. That's the whole plan.
A Weekend Away

Nelson Bay, Port Stephens

Shoal Bay, clear water and white sand

A slow one. Beautiful beaches, easy walks, nature and that laid-back coastal-town feel, about two and a half hours north of Sydney. Nelson Bay is the kind of place you go when you want to switch off, spend your days by the water and not have too much planned.

My experience & recommendations

Walk: Nelson Bay Foreshore Walk. Start: d'Albora Marinas, Nelson Bay ↗. Easy, flat coastal walk with views the whole way, around 1–2 hours depending on how far you go. Perfect if you want a walk without anything too strenuous.

Walk: Tomaree Head Summit. Start: Tomaree Head Summit walk car park, Zenith Beach Road ↗. The iconic one, insane views over Zenith Beach. Moderate, one steep section, only around 30 minutes up. Look out for the old WWII gun emplacements built into the hillside in 1941, easy to miss if you don't know they're there. We even spotted a pod of dolphins from the top, just cruising along below.

  • Swim at Shoal Bay ↗, clear, calm water and a really nice spot for a float. Jump off the jetty if you're feeling brave.
  • Slow coffee at Inner Light Tea Rooms ↗, a cute heritage-listed cafe overlooking Shoal Bay. Lovely spot for a lazy morning.
  • More beaches worth checking out: Zenith Beach, beautiful and a bit wilder, tucked between Tomaree Head and the bush. Wreck Beach, smaller and quieter, you walk down to it, which is half the fun. Box Beach, another peaceful one, surrounded by bush and rocky headlands.
  • Honestly, that's the whole plan. Beach, walk, swim, good food, repeat.

Breakfast at The Little Nel ↗. We went back every single morning because the food was that good, the coffee was unreal too, and the hash browns deserve a special mention all on their own.
