Whale Watching with Ocean Extreme

Circular Quay, Sydney $149 per person Bring: Sunglasses
A humpback whale breaching off the coast near Sydney
A whale breaching near a sailboat during the tour
A whale breaching fully out of the water near Manly
A whale breaching close to the cliffs

Sydney Harbour opens straight out into some of the best whale-watching water on the east coast, and Ocean Extreme is who I've used (twice now) to go find them. It's an absolute must-do, especially in October, when you'll see the calves learning how to breach.

My experience & recommendations

  • We departed from Circular Quay. Ocean Extreme also runs from Manly and Rose Bay.
  • We've done it on both their boats: the bigger, smoother OSPREY, and the smaller, faster EXTREME. Fun, but seriously bumpy if you land a choppy day.
  • First time out, we didn't see a single whale (apparently genuinely rare), so they rebooked us for free.
  • Bring sunglasses (100%) and sunscreen. Non-negotiable out on the water.

Chinese Garden of Friendship

Darling Harbour, Sydney CBD Right in the city · an add-on, not a full day trip Bring: Cash for the teahouse
Red lanterns hanging in the Chinese Garden of Friendship
Willow trees over the path in the Chinese Garden of Friendship
Waterfall and pavilion in the Chinese Garden of Friendship
Bonsai trees by the pond in the Chinese Garden of Friendship

A pocket of total calm right in the middle of the city. Traditional Chinese landscaping, a waterfall, koi ponds and pavilions that make you forget you're two minutes from Darling Harbour. Built in 1988 as a gift from Sydney's sister city Guangzhou, and genuinely one of the most beautiful spots in the CBD.

My experience & recommendations

  • Feels like you've stepped into a completely different world, even though you're smack in the middle of the city, genuinely zen.
  • Not exactly a day trip on its own, but one of the best things to add onto a day in the city.
  • Keep an eye out for the resident Eastern Water Dragons, big lizards that live in the garden, placid and harmless, just don't disturb them.
  • $12 entry for adults, open 10am–5pm daily.
  • There's a small teahouse inside if you want to sit with a tea and take it all in.

Taronga Zoo

Mosman, on Sydney Harbour ~4km from the CBD · ~12 min ferry or ~25 min drive Bring: A hat & water bottle
A koala up a tree at Taronga Zoo
A snake coiled up at Taronga Zoo
A tiger resting in its enclosure at Taronga Zoo
A dingo asleep at Taronga Zoo

One of the most picturesque zoos going around, hands down. Animal enclosures with unreal Sydney Harbour views stacked right behind them, bridge and skyline included.

My experience & recommendations

  • Don't skip the seal show, genuinely one of the best animal shows here, worth timing your visit around.
  • There are 15+ keeper talks and presentations on through the day, worth timing your visit around a couple, not just the seal show.
  • The harbour views are half the reason to go. You'll get postcard shots of the bridge and skyline from inside the zoo itself.
  • Drive and park on site, or take the ferry from Circular Quay (about 12 minutes), the ferry ride there is a highlight on its own.
